Yesterday I received my first suspension (4 days) ever on Xbox Live for taking a screenshot in The Witcher 3.
In this screenshot you could see the naked back of Yennefer.
Now the thing is I always thought that when you took a screenshot on your Xbox that you were the only one that could see it, but it seems that when you take a screenshot on your Xbox the default setting is to also upload them to the Xbox social part where everyone can see your screenshot. And there lies the problem, their social community is rated E for everyone and the screenshot I took is rated M.
I appealed my 4 days suspension (It got denied) and explained that although I’m not happy with it, I accept it (not that you have any choice in it). They want to keep their social part rated E for everyone, but on the other hand I also think that they need to take into consideration that I and others (Similar posts on Twitter and Reddit) simply didn’t know that our screenshots where also upload there for everyone to see, if I knew that I would have disabled it long ago.
Reaching out to (Microsoft) Xbox to talk about this issue is hard (you get send around in circles and never get a human that listens to your problem) so I do it this way with a blog post.
I hope they will consider and change the default behavior of the screenshot button, instead of uploading the screenshots and clips to their social thing the default setting should be to only store the screenshots and clips locally. It wouldn’t be the first time that you hit that screenshot button by accident thinking you hit the menu button.
How to turn off automatic uploads on Xbox
To turn off the automatic upload feature, go to your Xbox settings -> preferences -> Capture & share and put Automatic Upload to Don’t Upload
